The Fall of Melanau Kingdom and the expansion of Brunei empire

Raboung- Melanau crafts, Knowledge from the ancient time

A E Lawrence writing in the first edition of the Sarawak Museum Journal of 1911 in an article entitled "The First Brunei Conquests on the Sarawak Coast" stated that Awang Alak Betatar enlarged the newly founded Brunei territory by first defeating the Melanau hero Tugau, thus advancing his frontiers from the Tutong River to the Rejang delta.
According to Brunei's own epic poems, Syair Awang Semaun, this happened during the rule of Brunei's first ruler, Awang Alak Betatar, who was later renamed as Sultan Muhammad Shah when Brunei battled against the Melanau Government. When Melanau lost, Brunei conquered all its territories stretching from Mukah to Tutong. This short article will illustrate how Brunei began its first conquests thus enlarging the newly founded Brunei.

Grammar 9: Beza Miseak dan Piseak ? Dua-dua bermaksud memasak

Cooking in a Pan

Perkataan Miseak & Piseak datang dari kata dasar Iseak yang membawa maksud "masak". Me- dan Pe- merupakan dua imbuhan awalan yang sering digunakan dalam bahasa melanau. Perlu diingat bahawa dalam bahasa melanau tiada pengunaan imbuhan akhiran seperti -kan dan -i mahupun imbuhan apitan seperti me-..-kan, me-..-i.

Me+Iseak = Miseak -> dalam bahasa melayu membawa erti "memasakkan" sesuatu untuk orang lain. Imbuhan awalan me + kata kerja sering membawa maksud melakukan sesuatu untuk orang lain.

cth lain:
upouk bajou (basuh baju) Me+upouk = Mupouk bajou -> membasuh baju orang lain.
usok pa-a (cuci tangan) Me+usok = Musouk pa-a -> mencuci tangan orang lain.

Pe+Iseak = Piseak -> membawa erti "memasak" sesuatu untuk diri sendiri.Imbuhan awalan Pe + kata kerja sering membawa maksud melakukan sesuatu untuk diri sendiri.

cth lain:
upouk bajou (basuh baju) Pe+upouk = Pupouk bajou -> membasuh baju diri sendiri.
usok pa-a (cuci tangan) Pe+usok = Pusouk pa-a -> mencuci tangan diri sendiri.

Ini merupakan salah satu ketelitian dan perbezaan bahasa melanau berbanding bahasa melayu. Dengan penambahan imbuhan sahaja dapat membawa maksud yang berbeza dalam maksud ayat dan pengisian. Selamat belajar :)

Teluwaih Jinih- The Melanau girls, the belles of borneo

Melanau praises when seeing a beautiful lady goes:
Kejinih ji jawai a teluwaih yen, lah tipa musit matalau!
What a beautiful lady. Just like ray of sunshine!
Such claim may have held some truth. Rajah James Brooke had a liking for melanau girls for their fair complexion and dark open eye of the italians. He said that they had 'agreeable countenances, with the dark, rolling, open eye of the italians, and nearly as fair as most of that race.
