Sering kali terdapat salah faham yang mengatakan bahawa bahasa melanau itu merupakan dialek atau cabang bahasa melayu.
Istilah melanau melayu sering kali digunapakai. Sebenarnya tangapan begitu kurang tepat.<br />

Dalam penulisan ini, Learn Melanau ingin mengupas persoalan dan perbezaan antara bahasa melanau dan bahasa melayu. <br />

Adakah Bahasa Melanau cabang bahasa melayu? </h3>
Jawapannya tidak. Bahasa Melanau tergolong dalam rumpun North Borneo dan Bahasa Melayu dalam rumpun Malayo-Chamic.<br />
<br />
Fakta yang menarik, bahasa Iban merupakan bahasa yang serumpun dengan bahasa Melayu yakni dalam Rumpun Malayic dan Bahasa Bintulu (Vaie) bukanlan bahasa melanau tetapi dalam rumpun North Sarawakan.<br />

Mengapa bahasa melanau mengunakan banyak istilah bahasa melayu? </h3>
Seperti yang kita ketahui, bahasa melayu merupakan lingua franca di seluruh pelusuk asia tenggara. Bahasa melayu merupakan bahasa perdangangan dan banyak mempengaruhi bahasa-bahasa tempatan. Sebagai contoh bahasa Tagalog di Filipina menggunakan sekitar 3200 perkataan melayu dalam kosa katanya.<br />
<br />
Bangsa melanau yang juga merupakan pelayar dan pedagang utama di rantau asia tenggara, meminjam kosa kata bahasa melayu dan di"melanau"kan untuk tujuan perdangangan harian mereka dan untuk menerangkan konsep dunia melayu yang asing buat orang melanau.<br />
<h3>
Tiada sapaan waktu dalam bahasa melanau. </h3>
Dalam memulakan perbualan, sapaan merupakan pembuka bicara yang sering digunakan. Dalam bahasa melanau tiada istilah selamat pagi, selamat petang, dan selamat malam digunakan. Sapaan sebegini merupakan pinjaman dari budaya melayu.<br />
<br />
Sapaan (Muwueng) dalam bahasa melanau lebih berbentuk gurauan (Selurok), bidalan (Tidak/ Perambahan), atau omongan terhadap kerja yang tengah dilakukan.<br />
<br />
Contoh:<br />
Menyapa seseorang yang tengah menjemur kain:<br />

"Puwei gak dibak pala ji kaau giyen". (Berjemur dibawah mentari rupanya kamu disana). </blockquote>

Menyapa seseorang yang berjalan membawa barang runcit ditangan:<br />

"Mengasi kawak idak ji wak nasui nou yen" (Banyaknya barang yang dibawa itu). </blockquote>
<h3>
Tiada ungkapan "Terima kasih".</h3>
Kebanyakan bahasa-bahasa di borneo khususnya bahasa melanau, konsep berterima kasih dengan ungkapan "Terima Kasih" merupakan konsep yang dahulunya amat asing.<br />
<br />
Ungkapan "Terima Kasih" merupakan ungkapan yang diperkenalkan budaya melayu kepada masyarakat borneo.<br />
<br />
Ini tidak bermakna bahawa bangsa melanau tidak tahu berterima kasih, cuma bagi bangsa melanau, perasaan terhutang budi ataupun berterima kasih tidak mencukupi dengan sekadar ungkapan.<br />
<br />
Memandangkan bangsa melanau pernah tinggal dalam satu rumah besar, budaya bahawa setiap ahli masyarakat perlu menambah apa yang kurang dan membantu sama lain dilihat sebagai perbuatan yang fitrah dan lazim.<br />
<br />
Konsep membalas kebaikan orang lain pada masa jikalau ada kemampuan merupakan cara tersendiri orang melanau berterima kasih.<br />
<br />
Konsep ini tersimpul dalam ungkapan lama melanau:<br />

Apabila orang melanau melihat orang ingin berbaik kepadanya, ungkapan sebegini sering diucapkan.<br />

</blockquote>

Konsep "Fikir"</h3>
Konsep memisahkan akal fikiran dan perasaan merupakan konsep yang dibawa oleh bangsa melayu.<br />
<br />
Dalam dunia melanau, akal fikiran dan perasaan merupakan satu zat yang tidak boleh dipisahkan kerana akal boleh mempengaruhi perasaan dan perasaan juga boleh pengaruhi akal. Penyatuan akal dan perasaan ini dirumuskan sebagai istilah "Naseng".<br />
<br />
Oleh yang demikian, jikalau orang melanau ingin bertanya pendapat seseorang, orang tersebut akan ditanya tentang "Naseng" nya:<br />

Betan tan naseng nou? Apakah rasa "Naseng" awak? ( Apa fikiran kamu?)</blockquote>

Dalam budaya melanau, berfikir ( melanau: Pikir) dilihat sebagai sesuatu yang tidak baik. Lazimnya orang melanau melarang orang yang kuat sangat befikir<br />

kerana perbuatan ini boleh menimbulkan was was dan menganggu perjalanan pekerjaan harian dan juga menganggu "Naseng" (Pedeh Naseng).<br />

The strong wind brings heavy rain and blows the flowers off from the
trees as well as uproots the trees. The flood waters bring them to the
sea.<br />

Logs floating in the sea are pushed ashore by huge waves to the
beaches. The strong wind blows the branches and fronds of the coconut
and sago palms as well as the leaves of the other trees making them open
up to look just like the gills of the fish. As such, this month of
strong winds and rain is so named. This marks the end of the year for
the Melanau.

All activities of the Melanau is tabooed during this
month. Marriage is not allowed and so are the activities of livelihood,
such as fishing, planting, house construction and everything else. This
month is regarded as a month of ill fortune by the Melanau. <br />

This is the beginning of the monsoon season (suloh). Strong winds begin
to blow, shifting the location of the sun and the moon. The Melanau
calls it the South East Moon (Bulan Tenggara). This marks the ninth
month. <br />

Events</h2>
It is the end of the fishing season for the Melanau. It is the
last time that the fishermen can go out to sea for the year and only the
brave would dare venture out stealthily to fish.<br />
<br />
In the morning, the
sea will be calm, but by afternoon, waves will be at its biggest, thus
any fishermen who dare venture out will have to return before afternoon.<br />

This marks the eighth month. According to Melanau belief, this is caused

This is the third and final fishing season for the
year for the Melanau. This is also the time for the Melanau to start
planting rice and sago palm as well as other crops. In Melanau
tradition, they say that such as the earth grows well so will the crops
that they plant.<br />

bountiful and the fishermen will enjoy fishing and will have plenty of
fish to prepare for the forthcoming monsoon season ,
which will be long and when no work can be done due to the wind and
heavy rain.<br />

of Bulan Pegalan (September).

Which roughly translated:<br />
A motherly love is when she is willing to kiss feed her infant during her meal and let her infant go full feed first.<br />
<br />
Mepak is the act of chewing food for the purpose of physically breaking it down in order to feed a baby.<br />
<br />
This is a traditional way to feed a baby used for generation by melanau mothers.<br />
<br />
For western people and younger generation, Mepak may be alien to them but this is actually one of the most ancient practice for feeding a baby and perhaps the most natural way.<br />
<br />

The sea will be very calm but there will be little fish to catch as it
is the time for the fish to spawn. This month is called the month of
Pegalan because this is the time when the Pegalan (North) Star is high
in the sky at the hour of six at eventide. This marks the seventh month. <br />

Events</h2>
Legend has it that this is the month when the Melanau finds it
difficult to swallow their saliva i.e. difficult to look for food.
During this month, the Melanau would avoid getting married at all cost
as the marriage would be cursed in that they will find it difficult to
make a living.<br />

It is time
for the Melanau to go to the jungle/forest and begin their work for the
planting season. They will start to cut the big trees and vines as well
as plant their crops. The farmers will continue their jungle clearing
work until the beginning of the next month, Bulan Paka Ayeng (July).<br />

Pada hari ini ingin Learn Melanau kongsikan pendapat seorang pelestari adat melanau, saudara Eduine Kusai, mengenai hala tuju Kaul Serahang Kakan dan Pesta Kaul yang diraikan sebagai acara tahunan di Mukah.<br />

Bacalah dengan teliti dan hati yang terbuka. Learn Melanau berharap agar pembaca dapat menilai erti sebenar dan kehalusan budaya melanau sebagai tanda ketamadunan bangsa yang sudah sekian lama melahirkan generasi bijak pandai zaman berzaman:<br />

Memandangkan isu kaul begitu hangat di ruangan ini, betapa saya baru menyedari betapa ramainya anak-anak Melanau yang masih begitu mencintai dan menjunjung adat budaya bangsa sendiri.<br />
<br />
Warisan berzaman pusaka nenek moyang ini telah kita warisi sejak sekian lama, pernah hampir pupus suatu ketika (mungkin sdr Sapan Puloh) masih ingat apabila intipati adat kaul yang sebenar iaitu Seraheng Kakan dibawa di dalam lori kerana motif penganjuran adalah keramaian, bukan entiti adat seperti yang begitu hebat dan hangat diperkatakan disini.

<br />
Hal yang sama berterusan pada tahun-tahun berikutnya sehingga pernah Bapak Kaul (adat) menangis di Kuala Mukah dengan kehadiran hadirin tidak sampai 50 orang.<br />
<br />
Mungkin Pn Diana Rose masih ingat "matai pu'un akou mudei neh, kaul telou Melanau kak matai".(bukan Kaul Mukah secara langsung). Tetapi timbul pula persoalan di benak ini, apakah yang cuba kita pertahankan sekarang, adat itukah atau pengisiannya?<br />
<br />
Tradisi itukah atau kemeriahannya? Budaya warisan itukah atau persembahan yang berlatarkan budaya semata? Kaul itukah atau pesta? Mungkin komen saya sedikit lari dari isu pokok sekarang, tetapi saya ingin menarik perhatian anak-anak Melanau untuk memahami tentang adat budaya bangsa, tentang apa itu Kaul dari konteks adat (sekiranya fokus hujah kita adalah atas dasar adat) Saya bukan pengkaji, bukan juga pemimpin, tetapi yang saya ingin kongsikan adalah dari konteks atau sudut pandang pelaksana adat.

Intipati kaul yang dilupakan</h2>
Seperti yang pernah saya suarakan banyak kali sama ada melalui wadah FB, mahupun secara bersurat kepada pihak-pihak berkaitan atau cadangan-cadangan melalui kertas kerja yang pernah antaranya menjadi resolusi Kaul Mukah, fahami beza antara Kaul dan Pesta, antara ritual dan persembahan.
<br />
<br />
Jika kita berdebat sekarang tentang adat dan budaya, maka seharusnya kita menyedari bahawa apa yang menjadi intipati kepada "Kaul Mukah" sebenarnya telah berlalu dengan jenama tersendiri dalam paksa kita relakan demi kelestarian apa yang sebenar-benarnya adat iaitu "Kaul Seraheng Kakan" pada 9 April lalu (sama ada kita sedar atau tidak).<br />
<br />
Tetapi seandainya kita sekarang membicarakan tentang kemeriahan dan keseronokan, keindahan dan kecantikan, keasyikan dan tarikan, dari aspek pengisian atau paparan dengan berunsur budaya (sekadar unsur), maka sebenarnya yang kita pertahankan itu adalah "pesta". Itu dari sudut pandang saya secara peribadi tetapi asasnya adalah adat dan budaya.

Isu Kaul UiTM</h2>
Maka dari situ, saya boleh rumuskan, biarkan UITM dengan pestanya tetapi pengisiannya tidak menjadi suatu kesalahan jika memasukkan simbolik tradisi kaul, jangan "Kaul". Ada implikasi yang perlu dilihat dari konteks itu. Namanya pula boleh dipinda disesuaikan rencana sebenar, contohnya "Pesta Budaya UITM". Tetapi seperti yang saya katakan tadi, pengisiannya mengapa tidak persembahkan pintomin ritual kaul, atau boleh saja digubah satu taridra berkaitannya.

Penggunaan seraheng juga tidak salah, tetapi hanya sekadar "seraheng gap", bukan kakan. Perlu juga diingat, UITM mempunyai kualanya sendiri, "Kuala Petian", maka biarlah Kuala Mukah dengan Pesta Kaul Mukah.
<br />
<h2>
Tiada Kaul tanpa ritual Seraheng Kakan</h2>
Tetapi dalam pada itu, saya juga sebenarnya kurang bersetuju dengan jenama Pesta Kaul Mukah, sebaliknya saya berpegang kepada konsep tiada Kaul tanpa ritual Seraheng Kakan. Maka saya pernah mencadangkan supaya pesta itu dijenamakan semula dengan mengugurkan "Kaul" contohnya jadikan sebagai Pesta Mukah, Pesta Budaya Melanau, atau lebih baik tetapkan terus pada 1 Mac bersekali dengan ulang tahun Mukah diisytihar menjadi bahagian.<br />

Namun yang Kaul sebenar Kaul Mukah dari konteks adat biarlah berterusan dengan amalan sedia ada. Saya bukan pesimis dalam perkara ini, tetapi betapa saya menyedari bahawa sejak sekian lama berada di sebalik Kaul Mukah atau pernah dikenali sebagai Kaul Tugek, dan terkini dipinda buat sekian kalinya bagi menjamin kelestarian budaya sebagai Kaul Seraheng Kakan, elemen yang lebih menjadi tumpuan adalah pengisian pesta, bukan adat seperti yang diperkatakan sekarang.

<h2>
Asal usul Kaul Kala Mukah</h2>
Mestikah kaul itu kita rujuk dan kaitkan dengan pantai, mungkin ya, tetapi sesiapa yang beranggapan sedemikian sebenarnya salah (atau mungkin saya yang salah). Kaul Kuala Mukah pada asalnya adalah Kaul Bateang Pededak (kawasan air berbual seperti air mendidih di hulu Sungai Tellian : sumber lisan dan warisan). Ipuk yang diseru pula adalah "ipuk guun, ipuk kayou, ipuk lie'ak, ipuk liduok, ipuk jakak, ipuk pegak, ipuk tanak".<br />

Hanya apabila masyarakat Melanau mula terlibat dan mempunyai hubungan langsung dengan laut, yakni menjadi nelayan, maka sedikit demi sedikit ritual itu bergerak seiring arus mengalir menuju ke kuala dengan kepercayaan kuala sebagai titik atau pusat pertemuan unsur-unsur alam.

Mungkin kita pernah mendengar nama-nama seperti Tua Kapuong Kadir, Tua Kapuong Abun, Tua Kapuong Dawi, kemudiannya diwarisi oleh Tua Kapuong Eward (Penghulu), Tua Kapuong Abdul Hamid, kemudiannya diwarisi oleh Penghulu Brahim Jack, Tua Kapuong Petran, Tua Kapuong Manduri, Tua Kapuong Haji Medahal (pemegang kepimpinan di sepanjang Sungai Tellian), sekadar menyebut beberapa nama utama (ramai lagi AJK yang pada waktu itu dikenali sebagai "kunsil kapuong") mempunyai kuasa pemutus kepada penetapan tarikh Kaul (bukan pesta).

<br />
Saya ingin kita memperbetulkan kefahaman bahawa "kaul itu pantai atau kuala" adalah salah sebaliknya mahu agar diterapkan (bagi yang benar-benar berbicara atas adat) "kaul itu seraheng kakan". Sekiranya kita melihat konsep kaul secara meluas, maka tanggapan bahawa "kaul dan pantai berpisah tiada" adalah salah.<br />
<br />
Sebagai contoh Kaul Penakub, Kaul Medong, Kaul Klid/Plajau, Kaul Sungai Kut (sekadar membariskan kaul-kaul yang menurunkan Seraheng Kakan) bukanlah lokasinya di tepi pantai.
<br />
<h2>
Kebenaran di sebalik pulang ke kampung demi kaul
</h2>
"A jauk bak pulek bak kaul". Ini satu lagi perkara yang sering saya persoalkan tetapi bukan mempertikaikan. Adat dagang berbalik pulang, tahniah!! Ternyata anda bukan dari kategori orang yang lupa daratan, lupa warisan, lupa asal. Tetapi apabila "kaul" dijadikan sebagai sandarannya, saya lebih melihat kepulangan itu adalah kerana pesta, bukan kaul.

<br />
Tetapi ia bukanlah suatu kesalahan, kesempatan yang seharusnya tidak boleh dipersia-siakan untuk bertemu sanak saudara yang kebetulannya juga pulang ke kampung halaman (alasanya sama "pulek bak kaul").
<br />
<br />
Tetapi dari sudut yang terperosok jauh nun di pinggir kuala, saya bertanya sendiri<br />

Nahhhh....dimana yang pulanginnya mau kaul, langsung pesta melulu. Dari itu, perbetulkan kefahaman kita berkenaan dengan kaul dan pesta.

<h2>
Menkomersialkan Kaul sehingga hilang intipatinya</h2>
Pesta penjana ekonomi. Ya, tepat dan benar. Cuma jangan pula dalam keghairahan kita mencari rezeki, mengenepikan adat budaya (dalam konteks kaul), sebaliknya mempersoalkan mengapa tiada kaul, yang sebetulnya mengapa tiada pesta. Kerana apa, kerana tarikan komersialnya.

<br />
Lantaran itu, jika pun bakal berlangsung keramaian berskala besar di Mukah (bukan lagi isu kaul di UITM) kemudian daripada ini, maka namanya hendaklah menggugurkan "kaul". Seperti yang saya cadangkan terdahulu, namakan sahaja sebagai Pesta Mukah.

<h2>
Rasional initpati Kaul dipertahankan</h2>
Rasionalnya adalah apabila orang-orang yang mengetahui tentang adat budaya tetapi kurang memahaminya mula berdebat dan berbicara. Mereka langsung rasa terhina (atau mungkin perasaan seumpamanya) kerana merasakan adat budaya nenek moyang mereka dipermainkan, diperlekehkan, diperkecilkan, diperkotak katikkan.
<br />
<br />
Identiti Melanau yang kuat dalam diri mereka marak bak api membakar lalu perdebatan pun bermula, ke mana teraju kepimpinan, di mana pejuang budaya dan seribu satu persoalan yang sebenarnya jawapan di depan mata tetapi sengaja bertanya. <br />
<h2>
Bilakah bermulanya Kaul sebenar?</h2>
Tetapi "kita" lupa bila kaul yang sebenarnya, kaul yang kita gahkan
identiti adat warisan itu berlangsung. Ternyata "kaul" telah dikaburi
dan dibayangi oleh PESTA, itu yang menjadi pokok, menjadi isu, PESTA,
bukan KAUL.<br />
<br />
Kaul bagi pelaksana adat, mungkin juga hanya saya dalam konteks ini, berlangsung sebaik sahaja gong dipalu seawal jam 6 pagi pada pagi hari upacara penghantaran Seraheng Kakan dan tamat pada jam 6 petang dimana tamatnya pantang bagi yang berpantang, dipendekkan daripada 3 hari yang sepatutnya).

Mungkin sdr <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sapan.puloh?fref=ts" target="_blank">Sapan Puloh</a> masih ingat dan bersetuju bilamana cadangan agar hak ekslusif Kaul Mukah di wartakan sebagai milik warisan pelaksana Kaul Seraheng Kakan dari Kampung Tellian. Tetapi, Mukah milik Mukahan bukan sekadar Tellianese. Tetapi kita ada rasionalnya, yang "mengaul Kala Mukah" itu dari Tellian (bersama penduduk-penduduk Mukah sudah pasti) tetapi yang memeriahkan pesta itu Penduduk Mukah (warga Tellian tak terkecuali).

Sebagai renungan kita bersama </h2>
Kalau saya kongsikan disini mungkin boleh menjadi sebuah buku, isu, persoalan, perdebatan, maruah, air mata, malah kenangan mungkin juga cinta dalam hampir 20 tahun berada di sebalik Kaul (bukan PESTA).<br />
<br />
Malah mungkin lebih "berat" daripada isu KAUL@UiTM, malangnya tiada medan seumpama ini untuk kita membicarakankan. Tapi andai isu itu timbul sekarang dan dipaparkan di wall individu atau kumpulan, saya pasti Kaul tidak akan mendapat sokongan seperti yang anak-anak Melanau pertahankan hari ini. Mungkin masih ada yang ingat, sayangnya tiada dokumentasi.

Akhirnya, saya mohon post ini diterima hanya sebagai curahan pandangan, bukan isu perdebatan. Saya mohon maaf andai ada pihak yang terasa, tetapi ini adalah hakikat dari sudut ADAT dan BUDAYA jika ia yang diperkatakan.<br />

Saya tidak membantah dan tidak juga menyokong kepada Kaul yang dikhabarkan bakal dilaksanakan di UiTM, tetapi seperti yang saya nyatakan, biarlah konsepnya diperhalusi dan diambil berat akan pandangan umum (pandangan berasas yang rasional). Sekiranya apa yang saya nyatakan tidak tepat, mohon maaf juga kerana mungkin ada yang lebih mengetahui, terutama penjelasan dari konteks adat budaya.

Penutup kata, Pencetus bicara</h2>
Saya mohon admin memadamkan post saya ini (mengeluarkan dari kumpulan jika dirasakan perlu) seandainya ia menimbulkan isu yang secara langsung membangkitkan pergolakan dalam kalangan anak-anak Melanau khasnya, dan warga Mukah secara keseluruhannya. Saya tidak mahu dan tidak ingin seandainya persoalan adat menjadi punca kepada saling menuding jari, saling mempersalahkan, malah saling berbalah dalam kalangan masyarakat beradat. Saya juga bukanlah pakar budaya, pakar adat, tetapi pandangan saya adalah ikhlas dari sudut adat itu sendiri walaupun mungkin tidak ada yang bersetuju.

Maka dengan itu, dalam kesempatan yang masih jauh direncanakan. Mengambil ruang waktu yang mana ahli-ahli di kumpulan ini ternyata masih punyai perasaan cinta akan adat budaya identiti bangsa Melanau.<br />

The emerald greenish hue reaches the shore. This marks the third month.
This is a time for the Melanau fishermen to catch as much fish to send
home as well as store their catch. <br />

Events</h2>
This is the peak of fishing season.
Towards the end of this month, the sea will turn to greenish clear hue
and the sea floor will be quite visible from the surface and as such it
will be difficult to trap the fish in their nets or catch them with
their hooks as the fish is said to be able to see through the fishermen
intent during this time.<br />

This marks the end of the first fishing season
for them and the beginning of the fourth month, when the winds and rain
will hinder all the fishing activities of the people. <br />

Timing </h2>
During this month, it is said all the fish will come down to the sea as
the sea will turn a greenish hue which is a call from the sea to the
fish that it is time for them to surface. This marks the second month.<br />
<h2>
Events</h2>
For the Melanau, this is the time for the fishermen to go to the sea to
catch fish. This marks the first fishing season for them.(During olden
times, the Melanau fishermen are known for their ‘barong panau’, a
fishing sailboat which could go out to sea for weeks on end.<br />
<br />
These boats
also double as traveling boats as well as for trading and fishing.
Today, the ‘barong panau’ is extinct as there are none left skilled
enough to build one. A picture of one can be found on one of the Brooke

This marks the beginning of the year and coincides with the Gregorian month of March.<br />
<h2>
Timing </h2>
During this month, it is windy and the rain comes down in light showers in the beginning. The wind will gradually become stronger and the sun will move northerly and the moon will replace the original location of the sun.<br />
<br />
Fish will be plentiful in the forest and the jungle as they come out to search for food to be eaten and to be stored. After that, they will hide again in their holes. This is a time when it is difficult for the Melanau to go out to work because of the strong wind, thus they will spend their time cleaning the tools and equipment of their trades.<br />
<h2>
Events</h2>
This is the time that they mark as the beginning of the year, the first month of Pengejin. At the end of this month, they will purify themselves and call the fish out from their lairs, from the beaches and the river mouths. This ceremony is called “Kaul” by the Melanau.<br />
<br />
During this ceremony, they would construct the huge swing called “Tibou” and sing the tibou mantra during its construction, seeking the blessings of their guardian ‘gods’ for plentiful flowers, bountiful harvests of fruits and that there be plentiful fish in the sea for them and that illness and afflictions be removed and all evil to be return to their own place.<br />
<br />
They will also send offerings called "Serahang" out to the sea to appease them and invite them to partake their feast with them. After the feast, all food and drink is left by the shore for the guardians and spirits to take with them. None is to be taken back for it it the feast for the spirits and guardians.<br />

Melanau are renowned as seafarers and merchants, establishing trading routes with other ports along Sarawak's coastal areas and establishing trade with foreign empire such as majapahit and china.<br />

They are reputed as some of the finest boat-builders and craftsmen. Hence it is natural that the sea (Daat) is their source of food and the costal region plays important part in their daily lives.<br />

Kaul - celebrated in the Melanau month of Pengejin to thank the Ipok (spirits/guardians) for a bountiful year past and a prayer for a good year ahead.<br />
<br />
The Melanaus belief is animistic and they believe that the world is protected and guarded by the various spirits, such as Ipok Guun (the guardian of the jungle), Ipok Talun (forest), Ipok Sungai (rivers), Ipok Pangai (wind), Ipok Daat (sea) and many more.<br />
<br />
During this time, they would honour them for what they were given for the year and ask them for their good will for the coming year. They would sing their praises and thank them for the harvest given to them in the past and pray that they would grant them protection and give them a bountiful harvest in the year to come.<br />

Melanau mukah is one of dialect spoken mainly by the people in the administrative district of Mukah. <br />
<br />
Did you know that there is a subtle difference in melanau mukah spoken in the village near the headwaters (Ajok) e.g in Tellian with the melanau mukah spoken in the villages near the estuary (Abak) e.g. Tutus hilir. <br />
<br />
In the past these villages are isolated and may at some point at war which each other, the type of melanau mukah they speak are very different.<br />
<br />
Fortunately nowadays many melanau in Mukah befriend with each other and the differences in vocabulary are often misunderstood as synonym by the younger generation - Same meaning different word. But for melanau mukah outside Mukah like in Miri division, these differences are still evident.<br />

Here are some examples:<br />

Sarawakians call bread as Roti Paun and in melanau it is called Rutik Paun. Not many knows that the word PAUN is actually originated from the word for Bread "pão" in Portuguese.<br />
<br />
The word pão is pronounce similar to PA-UN.<br />
<br />
The eastern seaboard of Borneo was charted, though not settled, by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. The area of Sarawak was known to Portuguese cartographers as Cerava.<br />
